Brief History: The City of Durham was first incorporated as a city in 1869. Throughout its history, the city has experienced several periods of growth and development thanks to its robust manufacturing industry centered around tobacco processing. When that and the other popular textile industry in the area began to decrease in the 50s, local representatives created the science park and the area became a part of the now famous Research Triangle Area.
Area Info: Durham is the 4th most populous city in North Carolina. It is the county seat of Durham County. Durham is also known as The City of Medicine with over 300 medical and health companies in the city. The city is also home to the Durham Bulls which are a famous minor-league baseball team who play at Athletic Park.

Amenities: There are many shopping centers located within Durham. The Streets at Southpoint is home to many popular name-brand stores where the Northgate mall has a popular carousel. Visit many local shops in Downtown Durham through the Brightleaf District and the Golden Belt District. You can also visit the Ninth Street District and the Rockwood District which houses many antique shops. Also, enjoy an endless amount of dining options within all of these districts.
Parks and Recreation: The Durham Parks and Recreation Department manages over 65 parks, 5 pools, 4 spraygrounds, and two lakes. Within these parks are multiple playgrounds, greenspaces, dog parks, walking and hiking trails, picnic areas, and disc golf courses. There are also seven recreation centers throughout the city providing multiple options for programming and events.
Public Transportation: The City of Durham is served by GoDurham while also partnering with GoRaleigh and GoTriangle. GoDurham provides multiple bus routes throughout the city and surrounding areas. They also provide resources on ride-sharing, shuttle services, and biking within the city.
Education: Durham Public Schools manages over 54 schools that over 32,000 students attend. There are also 35 private schools within the city, many of which are high-ranking. Several higher institutions reside in the city as well, such as Duke University, Durham Tech, and North Carolina Central University.
