Demographics: The breakdown of racial and ethnic groups are: White (56.1%); Black or African American (28.6%); Hispanic (11.3%). The median age for residents is 34. In 2017-2021, the median household income of households was $72,996.
Brief History: The City of Raleigh was created by the State of North Carolina in 1792. It is a planned capital city. While the city did experience economic growth in the 1870s it was not from manufacturing. Prosperity was realized through retail by way of family-owned businesses in the downtown district. Raleigh experienced rapid suburban growth beginning in the 1970s.
Area Info: Raleigh is the state capital of North Carolina. It is the county seat of Wake County. It is the second most populous city in North Carolina. Raleigh is home to the NHL Carolina Hurricanes. The home games are played on the ice at PNC Arena. PNC Arena is also home to NC State Men’s Basketball, major concert tours, and family shows.

Amenities: Raleigh is home to numerous shopping areas and main streets with quaint shops. North Hills Mall was Raleigh’s first enclosed mall, built in 1960 and enclosed in 1967. Additional shopping districts and malls include Downtown Raleigh, Village District, Crabtree Valley Mall, and Triangle Town Square & Commons.
Parks and Recreation: The Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources department of the City of Raleigh manages over 200 parks. These include athletic facilities, lakes, nature preserves, dog parks, and greenway trails. This includes a BMX race track at Lions park and JC Raulston Arboretum, a 10-acre botanical garden first imagined in 1976 by a professor at North Carolina State University. The arboretum serves as a living classroom for students and faculty and a resource for the green industry and the public.
Public Transportation: The City of Raleigh is served by GoRaleigh and GoTriangle. There are 33 bus routes operated by GoRaleigh and commuter services between the cities of Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill are provided by GoTriangle.
Education: There are 105 public schools, 54 private schools, and 10 traditional colleges and universities in Raleigh, including top-ranked private K-12 and PK-12 schools such as Trinity Academy, Wake Christian Academy, North Raleigh Christian Academy, and Ravenscroft, and top-ranked institutions of higher education such as North Carolina State University, Meredith College, or William Peace University.
